Other Events
The N.C. 4th of July is a living event and as such events are added and deleted along the way. The proceeding pages are flagship events and as such have produced the most questions over the test of time or they are an event of the Festival Committee.
This page is devoted to events, which have great significance in adding to the attendees’ experience. They are also events which happen in the surrounding areas but not officially part of the festival. Attendees may want to schedule their visit with those events in mind.

The Chapel of the Cross dates to 1843, built by soldiers at Ft. Johnston. In the cross fires of the Civil War, it was seized by the Union and served as their hospital. Later is was a school for African-American students.
The rich wooden interior with its 18th Century altar railings is the setting for baptisms, weddings, concerts, worship services and silent prayer. It is open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation to anyone in the community. Seven different political flags are displayed above the Chapel, representing the political entities under which the parish of St. Philip's has worshiped throughout the years. These include England, Spain, Grand Union, North Carolina, Confederate States of American and the USA.
Beside the Chapel is the memorial garden burial ground for church members, and the annual Memorial Day service honors those interred who served in wartime. The present day St. Philip's Episcopal Church is next to the Chapel, 205 E. Moore Street.
The original St. Philip's Church is now a state historical site at Brunswick Town. It served as His Majesty's Chapel in North Carolina, though ironically the British forces burned it in 1776 during the American Revolution. In May, these is an annual outdoor service and picnic on the site of these ruins.
